Bayern’s unbeaten streak of eighteen games in all competitions came to an end away to battling Fiorentina in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg, but that was of little concern to the Munich camp after Arjen Robben’s fulminating drive restricted Tuesday’s defeat to 3-2 and saw FCB through to the last eight on away goals.
The 42,282 crowd at the Stadio Artemio Franchi saw Juan Vargas hand the home side the lead with their solitary chance of the first half, Stevan Jovetic doubling the advantage ten minutes after the restart. Mark van Bommel pulled one back on the hour, but Jovetic completed his brace four minutes later to put Fiorentina in the driving seat. A truly stunning Robben piledriver just a minute later dramatically swung the tie back Bayern’s way, and the men from Munich held on to seal a place in the last eight on the away goals rule after a 4-4 aggregate draw.
