With just under two weeks to go until the resumption of Bundesliga hostilities, Bayern have claimed the first official trophy of the new campaign with a 2-0 victory over Schalke in the German Supercup, revived by the league after a 14-year absence.
The 30,662 capacity crowd at the shiny new Impuls-Arena in Augsburg saw a decent contest played at a very reasonable pace for a pre-season encounter. After a cautious first half, the second period saw chances at both ends, before Thomas Müller and Miro Klose struck in the final quarter of an hour to seal the deserved victory.
A makeshift Bayern side including five second-team players fell 3-1 to the Royal Blues in last week’s Liga Total Cup final, but the team sent out by Louis van Gaal on Saturday was far more familiar, featuring six men who were at the World Cup just a few weeks ago.
