Bayern came up just short of claiming a first trophy of the new term on Sunday. A more or less ‘B’ line-up fielded by the double winners lost the final of the 2010 LIGA total! Cup 3-1 to hosts Schalke and their new superstar Raúl. Hamburger SV claimed third place at the downscaled tournament, featuring 30-minute each way matches, with a 3-0 win over FC Köln earlier in the afternoon.

The 38,236 crowd in Gelsenkirchen saw the makeshift Bayern side make a perfect start to the final. After just six minutes, reserve striker Deniz Mujic, who plied his trade in the Austrian second division until last season, handed the double winners a welcome lead. But Raúl netted his first brace in Schalke colours on 25 and 35 minutes, Edu scoring in between the Spaniard’s strikes to settle the game in the Royal Blues’ favour. On 7 August, less than a week from now, the teams meet again to contest the German Supercup in Augsburg.
