Franz Beckenbauer’s long overdue testimonial match between Bayern and Real Madrid ended goalless but was an entertaining affair for long spells, the impressively-proportioned Beckenbauer Cup ultimately landing in Spanish hands thanks to a first-class display by World Cup-winning keeper Iker Casillas, both before and during the penalty shoot-out.
The 69,000 capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena saw a thoroughly entertaining first half with chances at both ends, although Real superstar Casillas denied Bayern the lead with a save from Holger Badstuber's spot-kick and further outstanding blocks against Franck Ribery and Miroslav Klose.
The second 45 minutes was a much tighter affair and the game went to penalties, where the Spain goalkeeper again excelled, saving from Hamit Altintop and Edson Braafheid to seal a 4-2 victory for the men from Madrid.
