Schweinsteiger seals last-gasp victory

Bayern utterly dominated the first half but lost their way at the start of the second and conceded an equaliser to Wolfsburg, only for Bastian Schweinsteiger to net a stoppage-time winner as the champions edged the official Bundesliga restart fixture on Friday evening.

The 69,000 full house at the Allianz Arena saw Thomas Müller volley a cracking first goal of the new campaign with barely ten minutes played, but if there was a criticism of Munich’s dominant first-half display, it was their failure to add a second before the break.

Edin Dzeko punished that lapse with the equaliser as Wolfsburg emerged from the dressing room as men transformed, but just as it seemed the Bavarians would drop points at home on opening day, Schweinsteiger connected with Franck Ribery’s cross to send the crowd into raptures.
