Long-time foes Werder Bremen did their best to play party poopers on Franz Beckenbauer’s 65th birthday, but even though Bayern struggled for fluency at times on the day, the champions were able to prevent the men in green filching the points as a reasonably entertaining match on Saturday ended in a goalless stalemate.
The 69,000 capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena saw presentable but sporadic chances at both ends in a first half which started energetically but ended up meandering towards the break. The men in red emerged from the dressing room bristling with purpose and far greater aggression, but Werder weathered the storm and Bayern eventually ran short of ideas as time went on.
The Bavarians now have a win, a draw and a defeat from their first three games of the new league season, and lie 11th in the table on four points.
