Bayern’s problematic sequence at home continued on Saturday as Bundesliga leaders FSV Mainz made it six wins out of six this term with a 2-1 success at the Allianz Arena, leaving the champions a worrying ten points off the pace after six matches.
The 69,000 full house saw Sami Allagui artfully open the scoring on the quarter-hour as the leaders rattled the champions for a spell, but Bayern fought their way back and levelled before half-time through a Bo Svensson own goal. The pace dropped after the restart as the sides probed each other warily, but the home side worked hard and had seemingly regained the initiative when Adam Szalai restored FSV’s lead on the break. Munich’s late surge was in vain this time and a first home defeat of term was the outcome.
The result leaves the Bavarians in eighth place on just eight points, ten off the top and seven behind second–placed Dortmund. After the Champions League trip to Basel in midweek, Bayern’s next Bundesliga fixture is another cracker, as the double winners travel to face high-flying Borussia next Sunday.
