Resurgent Mario Gomez netted a hat-trick as battling Bayern shrugged off an injury crisis and returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Although the champions’ makeshift side was a touch ragged around the edges at times at home to third-placed Hannover, there was no doubting Munich’s heart and commitment to the cause.
The 69,000 capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena saw Germany hitman Gomez open the scoring midway through the first half, although with both sides shorn of numerous regulars, the play was generally scrappy before the break. FCB picked up the pace in the second half and created a string of chances, Gomez wrapping up the points with two fine finishes in the last quarter of an hour.
The deserved victory sees the champions climb to ninth in the standings on eleven points from eight matches, ten points off new leaders Borussia Dortmund. The Bavarians are at home again on Tuesday night against CFR Cluj in the Champions League, before travelling to face Hamburg in the Bundesliga on Friday 22 October.
