A Bayern side in commanding form brought down the curtain on the 2010/11 campaign with a prestige friendly victory on Wednesday evening. Munich’s fourth game in five days ended in a 4-2 triumph away to top Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg, exacting a small dose of revenge for a 4-0 defeat on the same ground in a UEFA Cup semi-final return leg in 2008. Miroslav Klose scored twice, with Thomas Müller and Arjen Robben adding the other goals for FCB, Alexander Bukharov and former Stuttgart man Szabolcs Huszti replying for Zenit. Andries Jonker thus concluded his spell as FCB head coach without a defeat of any sort to his name.
“We have to do whatever it takes to avoid losing, even if it’s only a friendly,” urged Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, on the books in St Petersburg from February 2007 until August 2009. Jonker clearly agreed, fielding all his fit Bundesliga stars from the start with the exception of Mario Gomez. Bastian Schweinsteiger missed the match (broken toe) but travelled to Russia. Thomas Kraft (dental surgery) and Breno (ankle) were absent from the trip.
