Bayern All Stars fall to Zidane & Co

Eleven goals, three penalties, two own goals, scintillating moments of skill and a 73,000 crowd enjoying the fabulous entertainment despite the driving rain: these were the key ingredients in Sunday night’s All Star match between the Real Madrid and Bayern veterans at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. An action-packed evening ended with the Spanish giants beating their German counterparts by an emphatic 8-3 scoreline.

The second annual Corazón Classic Match at the Bernabéu, with the slogan “All for Africa”, saw former greats such as Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Emilio Butragueño and Fernando Morientes take on the likes of Paul Breitner, Andreas Brehme, Giovane Elber and Roy Makaay. Proceeds from the game benefited the Real Madrid Foundation’s extensive aid projects in Africa.

The stars of the past rose magnificently to the occasion. Ruben de la Red (11, pen), Butragueño (16) and Fernando Redondo (40) handed Real a 3-0 lead, before Paulo Sergio (44) pulled one back before the break. In the second half, Alfonso (46), Robert Kovac (60, own goal), Niko Kovac (66, own goal), Fernando Sanz (83) and Davor Suker (90, pen) scored for the home side, with Niko Kovac (54) and Sergio (63) replying for Bayern.
