Mario Gomez scored four, Franck Ribery chipped in a brace and Nils Petersen opened his Bundesliga account as Bayern maintained their superb early-season form with another crushing win, their sixth on the bounce in all competitions and their 12th consecutive victory over Freiburg, who clearly dread the prospect of their twice-yearly appointment with FCB these days. The visitors caved in very early in the face of Munich’s overwhelming superiority on Saturday as the men in red simply strolled to a morale-boosting victory ahead of the start of Champions League hostilities in midweek.
The 69,000 full house at the Allianz Arena saw Gomez score his fifth league goal of term after just eight minutes, with Ribery doubling the advantage before the half-hour was up. Ribery struck again in the first half, and Gomez raced onto seven for the season with a double strike soon after the restart. The striker completed a second-half hat-trick from the spot with 20 minutes left, and only Freiburg keeper Oliver Baumann prevented total embarrassment for his side before the end, although even he could not stop Petersen rounding off the scoring at the death.
The victory means Bayern defend top spot in the standings on 12 points from five matches, two points clear of Gladbach and Leverkusen, but with Schalke and Bremen still to play their fifth games. Munich now embark on a run of enticing but challenging fixtures, starting with Wednesday’s Champions League Group A trip to Villarreal, and continuing next Sunday with the visit to Bundesliga title contenders Schalke.
