Mario Gomez’ 26th league goal of the season and a Thomas Müller strike at the end proved enough to earn Champions League finalists Bayern a sixth consecutive victory over south German rivals VfB Stuttgart in an easy-paced encounter on a steamy afternoon in sunny Munich.
The 69,000 capacity crowd sweltering in the 30-degree heat at the Allianz Arena saw Gomez open the scoring for Jupp Heynckes’ men after half an hour, although there were chances at both ends and the visitors even hit the bar twice.
The second half was largely devoid of incident as Bayern, marshalled superbly at the back by the excellent Holger Badstuber, restricted Stuttgart to a couple of half-chances and added a second with the last kick of the match when Müller stroked home on the break.
The result means second-placed FCB have 70 points from their 33 games, with 22 wins, seven defeats and just four draws this term. The Bavarians’ 34th and final Bundesliga fixture of the season is next Saturday’s trip to Köln, before the 2011/12 campaign reaches its climax with the two finals, the cup showdown with Dortmund in Berlin on 12 May, and the Champions League date with Chelsea a week later.
