Played one, won one. David Alaba scored from a free kick to seal victory in FC Bayern’s first pre-season friendly. The Austria international found the back of the net eight minutes from time in the 1-0 win at local rivals SpVgg Unterhaching.
In front of a 7,500 crowd at the Haching Sportpark, the resolute and tactically disciplined third division outfit posed Bayern a host of questions. FCB again and again faltered against the hosts’ solid defence, and when they did succeed in getting through, the opening goal remained elusive thanks to the woodwork on 26 minutes and Unterhaching keeper Stefan Riederer just after the hour mark. The clearly superior Bayern side finally took the lead through Alaba in the closing stages of the friendly encounter. But Unterhaching had reason to feel they were also winners on the night as Bayern Munich agreed to let the financially embarrassed hosts keep all the receipts from the friendly.
