Dream comeback for four-goal Gomez

Mario Gomez came back with a bang on Tuesday evening as an FCB XI beat fifth-tier FC Falke Markt Schwaben 6-0, the Germany international completing the full 90 minutes and scoring four of his side’s goals following a three-month lay-off after ankle surgery. The other goals against the Munich suburban outfit were supplied by Claudio Pizarro and Mitchell Weiser.

“I’ve not been away for six years. We shouldn’t read too much into this. They weren’t the toughest opponents,” commented a relaxed and realistic Gomez afterwards. Coach Jupp Heynckes declared himself “very satisfied. It was a very good game form the team for 60 minutes, not just from Mario, but from the whole team.” Asked if Gomez might even feature in the squad for Saturday’s trip to Nürnberg, the boss said there was “no decision as yet.”

Decimated side away to Markt Schwaben

In his first match since 4 August, the pre-season LIGA total! Cup meeting with Hamburg, Gomez not only scored four goals but also captained the Bayern side. Due to international call-ups, injuries and illness, coach Heynckes was only able to fild six members of the senior squad: Pizarro, Rafinha, Weiser, Diego Contento, Tom Starke and Gomez. Players plucked from the reserves and the U-19 youths made up the numbers.
