It was only a friendly between teams deep into energy-sapping mid-season training, but Bayern still sent out a clear message to their domestic rivals with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over a tired-looking Schalke side on Tuesday. The match, marking the end of FCB’s week-long training camp in Qatar, was a one-sided affair settled by goals from Thomas Müller (2), Mario Mandzukic (2) and Mario Gomez.
Jupp Heynckes made two changes to his starting line-up compared to the 4-0 victory over Qatari champions Lekhwiya SC on Saturday, with Tom Starke deputising for Manuel Neuer in goal and Daniel van Buyten replacing the injured Jérôme Boateng. The Royal Blues also put out a near-full strength line-up, and despite the heavy legs on both sides, the 2,000 fans at Jassim-Bin-Hamad Stadium saw a good-paced game on the night.
