Two-goal David Alaba led the way as imperious Bayern moved 15 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday with an effortless victory over an outclassed Schalke side. The Reds, still to concede a goal in 2013, played the Royal Blues off the park at times, and with their rivals faltering, are looking more like champions-designate with every passing week.
The 71,000 full house at the Allianz Arena saw the home side effortlessly dominate a one-sided first half, David Alaba opening his account for the season with an 18th-minute penalty, and Bastian Schweinsteiger doubling the lead after the half-hour with an unstoppable free-kick.
Alaba stroked home his second and Bayern’s third six minutes into the second half, before Mario Gomez marked his return to the team with the fourth on 63 minutes. That finally ended the game as a contest, although in truth there had only ever looked like being one winner.
A 17th win of the campaign, combined with Dortmund’s 4-1 defeat at home to Hamburg and Leverkusen’s 3-3 draw with Mönchengladbach, takes Bayern onto 54 points from 21 matches and sees Heynckes’ men extend their lead in the standings to a yawning 15 points over BVB. The Bavarians are next in action away to Wolfsburg next Friday evening.
