Tenacious FCB run up twelfth away success

Bayern broke another all-time Bundesliga record on Saturday evening with a 12th away win of the season, also gaining a measure of revenge for their solitary home reverse of the campaign by beating third-placed Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 thanks to a first-half Mario Gomez strike and a late Philipp Wollscheid own goal.

The 30,210 capacity crowd at the BayArena saw a cagey opening spell with neither side prepared to take early risks, but the visitors picked up the pace midway through the first half and Gomez showed great individual skill to open the scoring after 37 minutes.

The game ebbed and flowed for a period after the restart, but Bayer were much livelier than in the first half and Simon Rolfes equalised with a quarter of an hour to play. The leaders never gave up and were rewarded three minutes from time when Bayer defender Wollscheid deflected the winner over the line with his shoulder from Bastian Schweinsteiger’s free-kick.

Saturday’s victory was Bayern’s 22nd in the league this season, as the champions-elect continue their relentless march on the title with a massive 69 points from 26 games, 20 points clear of champions Dortmund with eight matches remaining. Following a two-week international break, the Bavarians are back in action on the evening of Saturday 30 March at home to Hamburg, before the focus switches to the Champions League and the quarter-final first leg clash with Juventus at the Allianz Arena the following Tuesday.
