A record 19,200 hopefuls applied for a place in the Paulaner Dream Team for the third Paulaner Cup des Südens (Cup of the South) this year, and on Friday evening, the dream of taking on the senior Bayern stars came true for 26 delighted players, including one from China. A 4,000 crowd in Arco saw a torrent of goals from Pep Guardiola’s men, as Alessandro Schöpf, Xherdan Shaqiri and Claudio Pizarro scored hat-tricks, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Emre Can, Oliver Markoutz and Vladimir Rankovic completing a 13-0 victory.
Board member for sport Matthias Sammer described the festival of football as “a fine thing,” in which the Paulaner Dream Team came away with great credit from the encounter with an FCB side featuring a blend of familiar and less well-known names. Can opened the scoring on 12 minutes, before 18-year-old prodigy Markoutz doubled the lead after half an hour with a 20-yard drive. Bayern created plenty of chances after that but the finishing was a trifle wayward, with Thomas Müller and Co twice hitting the goal frame.
