FC Bayern lost the first semi-competitive warm-up match in the build-up to the 2015/16 season as the Reds fell 2-1 to Augsburg in the 2015 Telekom Cup semi-final. Bayern will now play hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach in the third-place play-off, with Augsburg facing Hamburg in the final.
FCB made the better start to the 45-minute encounter at Borussia Park and took a seventh-minute lead through Thiago's close-range effort from a superb Costa lay-off. Sebastian Rode could have doubled the lead three minutes later but the midfielder's shot hit the crossbar, before Thomas Müller narrowly missed out on the quarter-hour.
Ulreich beaten by Hong
Bayern were in control but were punished for not making the most of their dominance when FCA's Alexander Esswein charged down the right channel and beat FCB keeper Sven Ulreich with a low drive. The fans now witnessed an open match with a happy end for Augsburg when Jeong-Ho Hong headed the 35th-minute winner from a corner.
"We put together some good moves and played some decent football, but it's still early days in preseason," said Müller afterwards, "now we obviously want to win the third-place play-off.“
