Reds fall to clinical Gladbach

Increase font size Text size

FC Bayern lost 2-0 to Borussia Mönchengladbach in Wednesday's friendly. The young Bayern team missing the majority of first-team players were dominant in the first half, but the Foals were ruthless after the restart, Hannes Wolf putting the visitors ahead before Michael Wentzel closed out the meeting.

Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, Dayot Upamecano, Omar Richards, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Joshua Zirkzee, Michaël Cuisance, Bouna Sarr, Tanguy Nianzou, Malik Tillman, Josip Stanisic and Thorben Rhein took the field for Bayern at the Allianz Arena. Among others, Sergy Gnabry came on in the second half.

Reds in control

Bayern were dominant from the off and had their first chance after two minutes, when Lazslo Benes resorted to a foul to stop Tillman, keeper Tobias Sippel making a strong save to deny Choupo-Moting's free-kick. Munich remained in control and kept Gladbach at arm's length, although Joe Scally did fire an effort wide.

Bayern upped the ante after 30 minutes, Zirkzee hitting the side-netting and Nianzou miscuing an effort, and the contest was goalless at half-time.

Ruthless Foals close it out

A setback came before the hour mark, when Scally's cross found Wolf, who tapped home from close range as Julian Nagelsmann prepared to replace most of his players. Hoffmann denied Wolf before Nemanja Motika saw an effort deflected wide at the other end.

Bayern pushed for an equaliser, Gnabry seeing an effort blocked, but the day turned sour when Hoffmann tipped away a cross, Wentzel tapping home the loose ball. Taylor Booth forced a fine save from Sippel before Gnabry had the ball in the back of the net, only for the linesman to raise his flag and deny the goal.

The Reds next face Napoli in the Audi Football Summit at the Allianz Arena on Saturday. Bayern and Gladbach will meet again in the Bundesliga on 13 August.
