On-song Bayern maintain winning form

FC Bayern beat Wolfsburg 2-0 on Sunday, winning their first Bundesliga home match in the nascent season. Jamal Musiala and Thomas Müller handed Bayern a two-goal lead in the first half. Their third competitive victory this season means Munich top the table, level on points with Dortmund but ahead on goal difference after two matchdays.

Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernández and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Müller, Joshua Kimmich, Marcel Sabitzer and Musiala featured in midfield, with Sadio Mané and Serge Gnabry up front. Leroy Sané came on for Gnabry at half-time, Mathys Tel and Ryan Gravenberch taking over from Mané and Musiala in the closing stages for their home debuts.

Two up at half-time

After a minute's silence for former club president Willi O. Hoffmann, the visitors got off to a good start but Bayern soon took control of the game. A Davies clearance clipped the outside of the post, Baku's long ball evading Nmecha. Pavard directed a header onto the bar at the other end before Bayern had the ball in the back of the net when a Gnabry square invited Mané to tap home, but the goal was ruled out for offside after VAR intervention.

The champions took the lead when Müller found Musiala, who stood his ground against two defenders and beat keeper Koen Casteels. The latter soon stood out with a strong save against Pavard. Gnabry, Musiala and Sabitzer all saw shots blocked, but a second goal was coming and arrived shortly before half-time, when Kimmich let fly and Müller diverted the shot past Casteels.

Cruise control

There was a mix-up in the Bayern box shortly after half-time but Neuer eventually got hold of the ball. Casteels denied Kimmich and Müller miscued from distance, Sané also saw a shot saved. Upamecano soon tapped in but the flag was up for offside.

Mané directed a header wide before netting a second one, but Bayern had their third goal chalked off for offside after a tight call. Neuer denied Waldschmidt before Tel aimed wide and Casteels saved a deflected Sané effort as Bayern recorded a comortable victory.

The Bavarians will be back in action next Sunday when they travel to face Bochum.
