Bayern beaten in Mainz

FC Bayern were beaten 2-1 away at Mainz on Saturday. Bayern got off to a good start, but Mainz soon got a grip and Jae-sung Lee put the home side in front before half-time. Lee doubled the lead on the hour, with Sané pulling one back in the closing stages, but another goal refused to come as Bayern slipped to a first Bundesliga defeat of the season in the second-to-last match of the year.

Bayern started with Daniel Peretz in goal and Konrad Laimer, Eric Dier, Minjae Kim and Raphaël Guerreiro in defence. Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlović, Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané took up station in midfield, with Thomas Müller up front. Sacha Boey, Leon Goretzka and Mathys Tel came on for Guerreiro, Pavlović and Dier in the second half.

Trailing at half-time

Bayern were in the driving seat at first, with Sané seeing a shot blocked and Olise hitting the post, but Mainz were bold and Jonathan Burkardt fired just wide from a counter. Big chances were at a premium until Peretz denied Anthony Caci and Sané saw another effort blocked at the other end. Mainz then took the lead when Armindo Sieb's shot took a deflection and found Lee, who slotted past Peretz.

Sané's goal not enough

Munich went looking for an equaliser after the restart but struggled to create a telling opportunity. They then found themselves two goals down when Sieb's low cross found Lee, whose shot on the spin beat Peretz with the help of a deflection.

Sané and Sieb both fired efforts over at either end, while Musiala also flicked a header over. Bayern finally pulled one back when a Kimmich shot was deflected and Sané tapped home. Vincent Kompany's men pushed for a second goal, but it was not to be as they suffered their first Bundesliga defeat of term.

The result means Bayern have 33 points from 14 matches. The Bavarians will be back in action on Friday when they entertain RB Leipzig in the last match of the year.
