FC Bayern were beaten 3-0 away at Feyenoord in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Bayern were dominant throughout but failed to take their multitude of chances, while the hosts were clinical and took a two-goal lead through Santiago Giménez in the first half before substitute Ayase Ueda closed out the meeting late in the second half.
Bayern started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman, with Harry Kane up front. Davies had to be subbed off with an injury late in the first half, Raphaël Guerreiro taking over. Leroy Sané came on for Laimer at half-time, with Aleksandar Pavlović, Serge Gnabry and Thomas Müller replacing Kim, Coman and Musiala in the second period.
Trailing at half-time
The pattern for the night was quickly established as Bayern controlled possession, with the home side looking to strike on the break. Feyenoord keeper Justin Bijlow clawed away an early Kimmich corner, but the Dutchmen took the lead when Gijs Smal's through ball found the charging Giménez, who fired past Neuer.
Goretzka headed over and Coman saw an effort saved before Musiala fired wide. Bayern upped the pressure, with Bijlow making fine saves to deny Coman and Kane. Munich saw a number of efforts blocked before Igor Paixão almost put through his own goal from a Kimmich corner, but Bijlow was on hand again. Feyenoord were then awarded a penalty when Guerreiro upended Paixão in the box moments after coming on, with Giménez converting to double the lead before half-time.
No way through
Olise fired over and Bijlow denied Kane and Musiala after the restart. It was one-way traffic in Rotterdam, with Goretzka seeing an effort saved before a Gnabry shot was blocked. Upamecano and Kane had their efforts deflected wide before Sané's header crashed off the post and Goretzka fired over, but a goal just refused to come.
Feyenoord then put the game to bed when Ueda beat Neuer from another break. Bayern kept pushing but were ultimately left to rue their missed chances.
The result means Munich drop to 15th in the table. They will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Freiburg in the Bundesliga before taking on Slovan Bratislava in the last game of the Champions League's league phase next Wednesday.
