Olise the hero as Bayern down Freiburg

FC Bayern came from behind to down SC Freiburg 6-2 on Saturday afternoon. Yuito Suzuki and Johan Manzambi handed Freiburg an early two-goal lead, but Lennart Karl and Michael Olise levelled the scores before half-time. Dayot Upamecano, Harry Kane, Nicolas Jackson and Olise all scored after the restart as Munich sealed another fully deserved three points.

Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Josip Stanišić, Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof in defence. Leon Goretzka and Aleksandar Pavlović anchored a midfield featuring Olise, Karl and Luis Díaz, with Kane up front. Konrad Laimer took over from Goretzka at half-time, with Jackson, Minjae Kim, comeback kid Hikori Ito and Wisdom Mike coming on for Karl, Upamecano, Pavlović and Kane late in the second half.

Action-packed first half

Freiburg got off to the better start, a deflected Niklas Beste effort going wide. The away side took the lead when Matthias Ginter flicked on a corner for Suzuki to beat Neuer. Freiburg doubled the advantage from another set-piece, Manzambi rising highest to plant his header past Neuer.

Bayern got a grip now and Karl headed over but went one better when he sidestepped a defender and fired home. Suzuki aimed too high before Ginter beat Stanišić to a Kane pass, but Vincent Kompany’s men levelled the scores on the stroke of half-time, when keeper Noah Atubolu parried a Pavlović shot and Karl invited Olise to find the net via Atubolu’s fingertips.

Second-half gala

Karl slotted home to crown fine interplay with Olise, but the flag was up for offside. Bayern did take the lead when Olise’s corner found the unmarked Upamecano, who volleyed home. Pavlović soon charged forward and Kane capitalised on the mix-up in Freiburg’s box. Díaz fired just wide before a Dinkci effort went just over at the other end.

Olise miscued, but Bayern soon banished any last lingering doubts, with Olise inviting Jackson to slot home. The former rounded off the half-dozen when he cut inside and curled into the top corner of the net. The Frenchman, who was involved in five goals on Saturday, almost scored another one but aimed too high in added time.

The victory takes Bayern onto 31 points from 11 matches. The Bavarians will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to face Arsenal in the Champions League.
