FC Bayern beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1 on Wednesday night to finish the Champions League league phase in second place. Jamal Musiala handed Bayern the lead after the restart. Ismael Saibari levelled the scores, but Harry Kane sealed a deserved three points.
Bayern lined up with Jonas Urbig in goal and Tom Bischof, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Hiroki Ito in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović anchored a midfield featuring Lennart Karl, Musiala and Luis Díaz, with Nicolas Jackson up front. Alphonso Davies, Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, Kane and Sacha Boey came on for Upamecano, Karl, Musiala, Jackson and Bischof in the second half.
Goalless first half
The first half was a lively affair, with former FCB man Ivan Perišić aiming too high and Tom Bischof’s free-kick shaving the bar at the other end. Urbig saved from Sergino Dest and kept out a deflected Joey Veerman shot before Jackson tested PSV keeper Matej Kovář.
Pavlović saw an effort saved and Urbig denied Ismael Saibari. PSV had promising chances at the end of the first half, but Urbig proved equal to Guus Til and Perišić before the latter volleyed wide.
Musiala and Kane seal it
Urbig beat Veerman to a pass, but Bayern took the lead when Musiala beat Kovář after a one-two with Karl to crown his return to the starting line-up. Bayern were clearly dominant now and Kovář denied Karl before Gnabry fired wide.
PSV levelled the scores when Saibari beat Urbig after a one-two with Til, but Bayern restored their lead minutes later, Urbig’s long ball releasing the charging Díaz, who squared for Kane to slot home. Kane saw another effort saved and Boey fired wide before PSV’s Mauro Júnior was sent off for a second bookable offence in added time as Bayern sealed a deserved win.
The victory means Bayern finish the league phase in second place, meaning they’ll have home advantage in the second legs of any knockout rounds. They will learn the identity of their round of 16 opponents on 27 February. The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga.
