Shortly before his 19th birthday, the Lippstadt native bagged his first Bundesliga goal as Bayern beat Köln 6-3 at the Olympiastadion. The previous week he’d got his first FCB goal in the DFB Cup against VfB Stuttgart.

In 1976, Bayern were crowned European champions for the third straight year. It was a second European Cup for 20-year-old Rummenigge, contributing three goals to the club’s continental hat-trick.

Perhaps the greatest game in Rummenigge’s career came in March 1979 as he bagged a hat-trick of goals AND assists in a 7-1 win over rivals Gladbach. It was one of Bayern’s biggest-ever wins.

Bayern were finally back on top as Rummenigge led them to the 1980 Bundesliga title with a league-best 26 goals. It was the club’s first league honour since 1974.

Rummenigge was on top of the world as a 24-year-old. The Germany international wasn’t just the Bundesliga’s top scorer in 1980 but also received the Ballon d’Or.

Germany were once again European champions in 1980. As one of the driving forces behind the success, Rummenigge was named in the UEFA European Championship Team of the Tournament.

Coach Udo Lattek gave his hero a big hug after Rummenigge won his second DFB Cup title in 1984. The striker wasn’t just the captain in the final against Borussia Mönchengladbach but also put away the decisive penalty in the shootout.
