Having played for Bayern between 1985 and 1990, Flick returned to the club as assistant to head coach Niko Kovac in July 2019.
Flick took over as interim coach in November 2019, bringing Hermann Gerland back into his coaching staff as assistant.
Flick’s first game in charge was a 2-0 win over Olympiacos in the Champions League, before making his Bundesliga bow with an impressive 4-0 win over Dortmund.
Flick won eight of his 10 competitive matches up to the end of the year. The day after a 2-0 win over Wolfsburg he was handed a contract until the end of the season.
Flick found the right words for his team into the start of 2020 as well, soon guiding Bayern back to the top of the Bundesliga table.
Flick was unable to stand on a touchline for several months after the 2-0 win against Augsburg in March as the coronavirus pandemic brought football to a halt.
And during the break, Bayern took the chance to extend Flick’s contract beyond the end of the season.
FCB were on an incredible winning run which culminated in the club’s 30th German championship thanks to a 1-0 win in Bremen.
Only two weeks later and it was two trophies under Flick thanks to a 4-2 DFB Cup final win against Bayer Leverkusen.
Perhaps the most memorable game of the Flick era was the amazing 8-2 quarter-final win over Barcelona in the Champions League.
Flick guided Bayern back to the European summit with a 1-0 final win over Paris Saint-Germain, becoming only the fourth German coach to win the Champions League after Ottmar Hitzfeld, Jupp Heynckes and Jürgen Klopp.
As the architect of Bayern’s second treble, Flick has secured his place in the club’s history.
One of numerous accolades, Flick was named Coach of the Year in Germany after the 2019/20 season. The day he picked up the award was crowned by the 8-0 thrashing of Schalke in the opening game of the new campaign.
The 2-1 extra-time win over Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup didn’t just see Flick’s Bayern pick up a fourth title but set a new record with 23 straight victories in all competitions.
The next honour came only six days later with a 3-2 win against Dortmund in the German Supercup.
Bayern then won the FIFA Club World Cup in February 2021 to become only the second team after Barcelona in 2009 to claim six titles in a year.
Flick leaves with one final title, winning the Bundesliga with on Matchday 32 – as he did last year – to make is seven trophies in the space of 18 months.
Danke, Hansi for this amazing time. All the best for the future.
