Lewandowski put away a penalty to make it 3-0 in the opening 8-0 win against Schalke. It was his 163rd league goal in Bayern colours, moving him into second on the club’s all-time scoring chart.
Müller got his campaign and record underway on Matchday 2 with an unstoppable shot into the bottom left corner to earn a 2-2 draw away at Hertha Berlin.
Lewandowski was simply unstoppable on Matchday 3 against Hertha, scoring all four to see off the capital club almost singlehandedly in a dramatic 4-3 win.
Lewandowski was now up and running and got a brace in a 4-1 win at Bielefeld.
And Lewandowski then got another three in the 5-0 victory over Frankfurt.
Müller got his second of the season at Kaiserslautern by showing his ability on the ball. First, he left his opponent standing before lifting it over the goalkeeper for a 2-0 win.
Lewandowski got the better of Mats Hummels in the air in Dortmund to put FCB 2-1 up in Der Klassiker. It was his 11th of the season on only Matchday 7.
Müller was also adept with his head and earned a 1-1 draw against Bielefeld from a corner. The photo here shows another scene from the game where he was denied by goalkeeper Gerd Burdenski.
Lewandowski was again on target to put FCB 2-1 up in a 3-1 win at Stuttgart, this time with a thumping effort from distance.
Müller’s goal for 1-1 in a 2-1 win at Bremen became the source of much debate. Werder defender Rudi Assauer claimed it was actually an own goal by him, but the header was awarded to Müller.
Lewandowski put the finishing touch on good work from Kingsley Coman to make it 1-1 at Union Berlin with his 13th goal of the season after 11 matchdays.
Müller got his first brace of the season in a 3-1 win at Hannover on Matchday 11. The opening goal was a sensational flying header.
Lewandowski featured on the scoresheet twice in the 2-1 win over Wolfsburg. His header to make it 1-1 was his 250th Bundesliga goal.
Müller repeated his brace at Hannover a week later in a 5-1 win over Duisburg. He got his two in the space of 120 seconds.
Fresh from being named the best player in the world, Lewandowski struck twice, including in the 93rd minute, to give Bayern a 2-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen that saw the champions reclaim top spot – and not relinquish it for the rest of the season.
On the back of two braces, Müller was on a roll and added to his total with a hat-trick in the space of 11 second-half minutes to give FCB a 3-0 lead in a 4-1 win at Hamburg.
Lewandowski got the final two goals of a thrilling 5-2 win over Mainz on Matchday 14. His first was a penalty while the second was a well taken finish.
Lewandowski was again assured from the penalty spot to give FCB a 1-0 lead in their 3-2 loss at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Müller scored both goals in a 3-2 defeat at Frankfurt on Matchday 15. His strike for 1-1 was a good example of his physicality, while the 2-1 lead was a header.
Lewandowski got another goal in a 2-1 win at home to Freiburg.
Müller got four goals in the historic 11-1 win over Dortmund, which remains Bayern’s biggest-ever victory in the Bundesliga. After drawing a blank on Matchday 17, he ended the first half of the season on 17 goals.
Lewandowski’s penalty was the difference in a 1-0 win at Augsburg as the Hinrunde came to a close. He had an incredible 22 goals after 17 matchdays.
Even though a defender was right in front of him, Lewandowski still found the back of the net in the 4-0 win at Schalke in the first game of the Rückrunde.
Müller also started the Rückrunde with a goal in a 1-0 win at Fortuna Düsseldorf thanks to a strong header from a narrow angle at the far post.
Lewandowski got the goal to make it 3-1 in the 4-1 win over Hoffenheim, giving him 24 for the season from only 19 games. No player had ever scored so many at that stage in the Bundesliga.
Lewandowski got Bayern back to 2-1 down in the 3-3 draw at home to Bielefeld, chesting down the ball before spinning and firing into the far corner.
Müller went two outings without striking, but he then did so five times in a single game as FCB beat Rot-Weiß Oberhausen 7-0 on Matchday 21.
Lewandowski only got a consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat at Frankfurt.
Lewandowski got two goals in Matchday 23’s 5-1 win against Köln. The first was the result of good build-up play through Leon Goretzka.
Müller got another two in the 3-1 win over Kaiserslautern on Matchday 23. The second saw him snatch a loose ball away from goalkeeper Josef Elting and get it over the line for his 25th of the season.
Lewandowski loves the big stage, as he proved with a hat-trick in a 4-2 Klassiker win at home to Dortmund.
Müller would do anything to score goals, including going where it hurts, as he did here in Bielefeld. He didn’t score at this exact moment, but he did get the only goal of the game.
Lewandowski’s goal in the 3-1 win at Werder Bremen meant he’d scored against 16 out of 17 opponents in 2020/21. The only team to escape him was RB Leipzig, although he only faced them once because of injury.
Müller’s name featured on the scoresheet three times in a 5-1 win at home to Bochum, giving him 29 goals after 25 matchdays.
Bayern put an early red card behind them against VfB Stuttgart as Lewandowski scored three in a 4-0 win. The FIFA Best Men’s Player was then on 35 goals for the season, which surpassed his previous best from the year before. Moving onto 271 Bundesliga goals, it saw him displace Klaus Fischer (268) from second place in the league’s all-time scoring chart. Only Gerd Müller remains ahead of him on 365.
Almost exactly 49 years to the date, Müller and Bayern also faced Stuttgart on Matchday 26. Der Bomber bagged a brace in a 4-1 away victory.
A brace at Stuttgart was followed by a hat-trick in a 6-2 win at home to Bremen, meaning 34 goals from 27 games.
At times opponents could only watch on as Müller put the ball away. He got another two here in a 4-3 win over HSV.
Lewandowski missed four league games after the win over Stuttgart, but returned on Matchday 31 to strike again in a 2-1 loss at Mainz.
Müller got his 37th of the season in a 4-1 win away at Köln.
Bayern had already been confirmed as champions before they hosted Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 32, but that didn’t slow Lewandowski down as he bagged a hat-trick, including a brilliant sideways scissor-kick. He now had 39 for the season with two games to go.
A hat-trick in a 6-3 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 32 saw Müller break the 40-goal mark. It was also a historic date as Bayern played their final game at the Grünwalder Stadion. Der Bomber remained empty-handed on the final two matchdays as his 40 goals went into the record books for the next 50 years.
A coolly converted penalty for the opening goal in the 2-2 draw at Freiburg was Lewandowski’s 40th of the season and saw him make history by equalling Müller’s total. He then paid tribute to Der Bomber with his celebration.
The historic 41st goal: for a very long period against Augsburg, it looked as though it wasn’t going to happen. But then, in the 90th minute, Lewandowski seized on a spilled shot in the box and slotted home with aplomb.
