Bayern's all-German European encounters

Bayern have faced another German club nine times before in the knockout rounds of European competitions. Take a look back at those famous domestic affairs.

  • 1973/74 European Cup round of 16: Bayern played out two high-scoring matches against Dynamo Dresden. Thanks to a narrow 4-3 home win in the first leg, in which Wilhelm Hoffmann (centre) scored the first goal for FCB, a 3-3 draw in the second leg was enough for the Bavarians to progress. | © Imago
  • 1974/75 European Cup round of 16: The next East-West German clash took place a year later. Up against reigning East German champions Magdeburg, the Bavarians led by Franz ‘Bulle’ Roth (here against Detlef Enge) won both the first leg (2-1) at the Olympic Stadium and the second leg (3-2). | © Imago
  • 1977/78 UEFA Cup round of 16: Bayern and Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck (pictured against Jürgen Grabowski) came away with nothing in their first encounter with Eintracht Frankfurt on the European stage. The first leg was a clear 4-0 defeat for the Munich side, who also lost 2-1 in front of their home crowd.
  • 1979/80 UEFA Cup quarter-finals: Paul Breitner (pictured against Ronnie Hellström) and Co. went down to an unlucky 1-0 defeat to Kaiserslautern in the first leg at the Betzenberg, but Bayern overturned the deficit with a 4-1 victory at the Olympic Stadium. | © Imago
  • 1979/80 UEFA Cup semi-finals: Eintracht Frankfurt were the Bayern's opponents in the last four. Dieter Hoeneß and Co. put themselves in a good position with a 2-0 win in the first leg, but the eventual competition winners from Frankfurt turned the tie around in the second leg and advanced to the final thanks to a 5-1 win after extra time. | © Imago
  • 1997/98 Champions League quarter-finals: Bayern and Borussia Dortmund met for the first time in a European competition. The first leg at the Oly ended goalless and the second leg at the Westfalenstadion was also 0-0 after 90 minutes before Stéphane Chapuisat fired BVB into the semi-finals in the 109th minute. | © Imago
  • 1998/99 Champions League quarter-finals: Bayern put the Bundesliga champions in their place as Giovane Élber and Co. gave Kaiserslautern no chance in either the first leg (2-0) in Munich or the second leg (4-0) at the Betzenberg as two commanding victories paved the way to the semi-finals. | © Imago
  • 2012/13 Champions League final: After the pain of defeat in the ‘Finale dahoam’, FC Bayern were crowned European champions a year later in the first all-German final in the history of Europe's premier club competition. Arjen Robben's late goal in the clash with Borussia Dortmund (2-1) proved to be the winner and the ‘Wembley generation’ was born. | © Imago
  • 2024/25 Champions League round of 16: The first season of the new competition format brought an early all-German encounter as Bayern faced Bayer Leverkusen for a place in the quarter-finals, claiming a commanding 5-0 victory on aggregate, winning 3-0 at home and 2-0 at the BayArena. | © FC Bayern
