Games that saw Bayern crowned champions
Bayern are German football’s most decorated club as 33-time champions. From a one-off final to drama on the last day of the season or the earliest coronation in history, take a look back at the games that saw Bayern crowned champions of Germany.
Show full size 1932: Final – Bayern were crowned champions of Germany for the first time in 1932. The title back then was decided through a knockout finals stage featuring the champions of the respective regional championships. Bayern went on to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 in Nuremberg thanks to goals from Oskar Rohr (penalty) and Franz Krumm.

Show full size 1969: Matchday 32 – A 5-1 win over Kickers Offenbach brought Bayern their first title of the recently created Bundesliga.

Show full size 1972: Matchday 34 – The final day of the 1971/72 season was essentially a one-off final as leaders Bayern hosted second-placed Schalke. FCB won 5-1 in the first official match at the Olympiastadion to be crowned champions for a third time.

Show full size 1973: Matchday 30 – Bayern dominated the Bundesliga in 1972/73 and wrapped up the title with four games to spare thanks to a 6-0 thrashing of Kaiserslautern. Gerd Müller scored five of the goals and got to toast victory in the changing room with president Wilhelm Neudecker.

Show full size 1974: Matchday 33 – Bayern went head-to-head with Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1973/74 and prevailed with a game to spare after a 1-0 victory over Kickers Offenbach, coupled with Gladbach’s 1-0 loss at Fortuna Düsseldorf at the same time. Gerd Müller netted the only goal against Offenbach, meaning the 5-0 loss in Gladbach on the final day was far more palatable, especially since it came 24 hours after lifting the European Cup in Brussels.

Show full size 1980: Matchday 34 – The final whistle of Bayern’s 2-1 win at home to Eintracht Braunschweig on the last day of 1979/80 brought delight around the Olympiastadion as the Bavarians kept themselves ahead of Hamburg to claim the club’s sixth title.

Show full size 1981: Matchday 33 – Bayern defended their crown with a game to spare thanks to a 4-1 win in Gladbach in 1980/81. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge hit a hat-trick at the Bökelberg. Borussia’s Ewald Lienen presented Bayern captain Paul Breitner with flowers afterwards.

Show full size 1986: Matchday 34 – Bayern came out ahead in one of the most exciting title conclusions in history in 1985/86. After a goalless draw in Bremen on the penultimate day, including a missed penalty by Werder’s Michael Kutzop, the Green-Whites held a two-point lead but lost 2-1 in Stuttgart. Bayern beat Gladbach 6-0 at the same time to leapfrog Werder on goal difference and celebrated in style in the changing room.

Show full size 1987: Matchday 32 – A 2-2 draw with Bayer Uerdingen was enough to wrap up the title in 1986/87 as rivals Hamburg were also held to a 3-3 draw at Nürnberg.

Show full size 1989: Matchday 32 – This was the first time Bayern were confirmed as champions without kicking a ball. They had beaten Uerdingen 5-0 on Matchday 32 of 1988/89 before Köln could only manage a goalless draw at Stuttgarter Kickers three days later. The real celebrations came after the final day’s 5-0 victory over Bochum, including a pool party in the changing room.

Show full size 1990: Matchday 32 – Hansi Pflüger got the only goal in a 1-0 win at home to St. Pauli that saw Bayern seal the title on Matchday 32 of 1989/90.

Show full size 1994: Matchday 34 – Bayern held a one-point lead over Kaiserslautern going into the final day of 1993/94. Goals from Lothar Matthäus and Jorginho earned a 2-0 win over Schalke and the club’s 13th championship.

Show full size 1997: Matchday 33 – Bayern beat VfB Stuttgart 4-2 on the penultimate weekend of 1996/97. With Bayer Leverkusen losing 4-0 to Köln at the same time, it meant the Bavarians went four points clear and were champions with a game to spare.

Show full size 1999: Matchday 31 – A 1-1 draw against Hertha Berlin on Matchday 31 completed the job for Bayern in 1998/99. Stefan Effenberg, Bixente Lizarazu and the team then got to celebrate with fans inside Munich’s Olympiastadion.

Show full size 2000: Matchday 34 – Bayern wrapped up a 3-1 victory at home to Werder Bremen thanks to three goals in the first 16 minutes on the final day. But the real credit for this title went to neighbours Unterhaching, who hosted pre-matchday leaders Bayer Leverkusen and won 2-0 to allow Bayern to leapfrog the Werkself at the death and claim their 16th title.

Show full size 2001: Matchday 34 – Things were even more dramatic at the conclusion of the following season. Bayern went to Hamburg needing a point to retain the title ahead of Schalke. With HSV leading 1-0 in the 90th minute and Schalke beating Unterhaching, they were already celebrating in Gelsenkirchen. That was until Patrik Andersson smashed in an indirect free-kick following a backpass in the 94th minute to win it all for Bayern.

Show full size 2003: Matchday 30 – Bayern got the job done much earlier in 2002/03, winning 2-0 in Wolfsburg while rivals Stuttgart and Dortmund both drew. It took FCB 13 points clear with four games to go. Captain Oliver Kahn received the customary beer shower in celebration.

Show full size 2005: Matchday 31 – A comfortable 4-0 win in Kaiserslautern, coupled with Schalke’s 3-3 draw against Leverkusen, was enough for Bayern to wrap up the 2004/05 title with three games to spare. A cutout of the trophy was on hand to start the celebrations.

A brilliant Bastian Schweinsteiger goal at Eintracht Frankfurt sealed the deal to put Bayern 20 points clear of defending champions Borussia Dortmund with a whole six matches left.

Show full size 2014: Matchday 27 – Bayern secured the earliest title in history in 2013/14 as a 3-1 win in Berlin wrapped it all up after only 27 games. The gap by that stage was 25 points over Dortmund. Players were still wearing winter coats as they danced around the Olympiastadion.

They had beaten Hertha 1-0 at home on the Saturday of Matchday 30 before Wolfsburg then lost by the same scoreline in Mönchengladbach the following day. With the gap now 15 points and only four games left, there was no catching Bayern, who were celebrating at home.

The Covid-19 pandemic meant that celebrations happened in front of empty stands. It was the first of six trophies in 2020 for the club’s most successful year.

Show full size 2021: Matchday 32 – Bayern were making their way into the Allianz Arena to face Gladbach for Saturday’s late kick-off on Matchday 32 of 2020/21 when they learned they were champions after Leipzig had lost 3-2 to Dortmund in the earlier games. Bayern marked the occasion with a thumping 6-0 win.

FCB took the lead at Köln but were pegged back late on. With BVB slipping to a 2-2 draw at home to Mainz, Bayern knew they had to win and did so with Jamal Musiala’s late strike to make it an unprecedented 11 titles in a row.
