The Road to Munich
Claudio Pizarro was born on 3 October 1978 in Callao and grew up in the Santiago de Surco district of Lima. He began his professional career in 1996 with Deportivo Pesquero in his home country of Peru, before his path led him via Alianza Lima to Europe in 1999, when Werder Bremen brought the 20-year-old striker to the Bundesliga. Already in his second Bundesliga match, Pizarro scored his first goal; a week later, in a 7–2 victory over VfL Wolfsburg, he recorded his first hat-trick – a taste of what was yet to come. After two years on the Weser, FC Bayern took notice of the technically brilliant forward and signed him in the summer of 2001.
The Bayern-Years
Claudio Pizarro wore the FC Bayern shirt in two spells: from 2001 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2015. In Munich, the Peruvian with his inimitable technique and fine instinct in the penalty area became a crowd favourite. Under Pep Guardiola, the then 34-year-old experienced a second spring – in the legendary 9–2 win over Hamburger SV, the “Andes Bomber” scored four times. With FCB, Pizarro won five German championships and five DFB Cups. In 2013, he crowned his time at Bayern with the historic treble of Bundesliga, DFB Cup and Champions League – becoming the first Peruvian ever to lift the famous trophy. On top of that came the Intercontinental Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the DFL-Supercup. With a total of 18 titles, Pizarro remains the most successful foreign player in FC Bayern’s history.

Claudio Pizarro has written Bundesliga history: 490 matches, 197 goals – sixth place on the league’s all-time scoring list. At the age of 41, he ended his unique 21-year career in Germany in 2020.
