Christoph Freund has been sporting director at Bayern since 1 September 2023. The Austrian previously spent 17 years working at Red Bull Salzburg. Freund previously played in the club’s youth academy and returned as team manager in 2006. He was promoted to sporting coordinator in winter 2012 and later succeeded Ralf Rangnick as sporting director from the 2015/16 season.
Salzburg developed numerous young players from around the world during his time at the club, also winning the Austrian Bundesliga 14 times and the Austrian Cup on nine occasions during his years there. Salzburg have been in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League every year since 2020 and reached the round of 16 in 2022, where they were eliminated by Bayern. The Austrian record champions progressed to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2018.
