The striker came to the German record champions from Paris Saint-Germain, but his football beginnings can be traced back to his home city of Hamburg. There he played for Altona 93, FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV among others. That was followed by spells at Mainz, Schalke and Stoke City in England. He is particularly strong in the duels and in the air. In his very first year at Bayern, he won the Bundesliga as well as the FIFA Club World Cup.
