The Basketball team at Dom-Pedro Grundschule were incredibly excited to be in the presence of Paul Zipser. The German Champion and Germany U20 international visited the school on Monday morning as part of FC Bayern Basketball’s youth programme. The 20 year old was welcomed with open arms by the team, who are coached once a week by FCBB coach Marlon Whiteacker. Since 2010, Bayern have increased their community involvement – something decided by then CEO Volker Stix. This season the club are involved with 32 scores and reach out to in the region of 500 students. FCBB ensure that a recognised basketball coach is available to the schools.
The children were delighted to see Zipser, who took to the court alongside them and then answered questions. The 2.03m Forward was asked a variety of things, including: “You’re so tall, is that cheating?” to which he answered: “I don’t think so because the other players are also as tall as me.” The excitement was increased when the topic of being German Champions was raised: “Paul, are you a German Champion?”
Yes, Paul is a Champion, despite picking up a knee injury in Game 2 of the Play-Off quarter-final against Ludwigsburg. Since then he has been working with assistant coach Mutapcic in the hope of returning to action soon. Paul can certainly still shoot the hoops, having shown deadly accuracy from downtown whilst at the school. He ended by signing autographs and hi-5ing the team – until next time!
