Germany's record win

FCB at WWC: Matchday 2 Roundup

Group A

Vivianne Miedema started again for the Oranje in their second match against China but the result was not as favorable this time around. China edged out a 1-0 win but Miedema's team is still placed favorably to go through and face New Zealand.

Group B

After their record-setting opening win, Germany and its large contingent of FC Bayern players took on a familiar face in Nora Holstad's Norway. Leonie Maier was the only FCB player to start for Germany in a tight but entertaining match. Lena Lotzen and Sarah Däbritz came on in an effort to win the game for Germany in the second half but at the end both had to settle for the 1-1 draw. Norway and Germany will play for top spot on Tuesday.

Group C

Caroline Abbé captained Switzerland to an impressive 10-1 rout over Ecuador. Abbé came off in the 51st minute while teammate Vanessa Bürki stayed on the bench. Switzerland next face Cameroon on June 16 in the final game of the group stage. Mana Iwabuchi’s Japan are through to the round of 16 after a 2-1 win over Cameroon, though Iwabuchi did not feature. Japan play Ecuador on June 16 and hope to solidify their lead at the top of Group C.

Group E

Spain captain Veronica Boquete led her team throughout all 90 minutes but ultimately fell to Brazil 1-0, sending the Brazilians to the round of 16.  Spain now look to a win against Korea on June 17 in the hopes of advancing in their first World Cup.
