Germany's record win

FCB at WWC: Matchday 3 Roundup

Group A

The group stages concluded this week, and once again, there was no shortage of action and drama. Vivianne Miedema started again for the Oranje in their 1-1 draw against hosts Canada. The result meant the Netherlands finished as one of the best third-placed teams in the competition and will face defending champions Japan on June 23.

Group B

After a disappointing draw against Norway in the second game, Germany got back on track with a convincing 4-0 win against Thailand that saw them win their group. Melanie Behringer, Melanie Leupolz, Sarah Däbritz and Lena Lotzen all started for Germans as they dominated their opponents in impressive fashion, both Däbritz and Leupolz getting on the scoresheet. Elsewhere, Nora Holstad's Norway beat the Ivory Coast 3-1 to secure second spot. Awaiting Germany now are Sweden this Saturday, June 20. Norway, meanwhile, will face England on June 22.

Group C

Caroline Abbé and Vanessa Bürki's Switzerland lost a tight game 2-1 to Cameroon but also managed to advance to the knockout rounds. There they will face hosts Canada on June 21. In the same group, Japan and Mana Iwabuchi made it three wins from three games with their 1-0 win against Ecuador to top the group. Mana will take on Miedema's Netherlands in the Round of 16.

Group E

Spain captain Veronica Boquete again led her team admirably and even scored but ultimately came up short against South Korea, losing 2-1 and being eliminated from the competition.
