What a week it’s been for FC Bayern Basketball! After a stunning overtime victory over ALBA Berlin, which saw them reach the BBL finals, they beat Bamberg 84-73 on the road to get off to a flying start. Despite the heavy burden and long journey, FCBB are fully focussed and ready for game two, which takes place in the Audi Dome on Wednesday.

“Every moment is important in the playoffs,” explained FCBB coach Svetislav Pesic in the pre-game press conference. “You can’t underestimate your opponent for a second. If a team like Bamberg find their rhythm, they can win.” In short, his side has to be as focussed as they were last time out. “You can’t get ahead of yourselves. We’re 1-0 up but that game is in the past now. There are things we can improve on. We won’t be happy until we’re champions.”

It’s not going to be easy. The regular season winners have impressed throughout the campaign and will be determined to level the scores. American Guard Bradley Wanamaker has averaged 16.4 points and 4.3 assists per game in the post-season and is a big threat. Ryan Thompson (13.8 ppg in the regular season) and Janis Strelnieks (Playoffs: 13.1 ppg) are also key players.

FCBB CEO Marko Pesic is cautious: “We won away in Bamberg in game one of the semis two years ago but still lost the series.” The Baskets went on to lift the German Championship that year after a dramatic five-game series. Coach Pesic echoed these sentiments but also refused to be drawn on just how important a role history can play.

All of the Bayern players were focussed on Sunday – they worked well as a team and dominated the boards, which formed the basis of an impressive road win. “Our aim is to find the balance between playing a quick game whilst also maintaining control at all times,” explained the head coach. “We need to be quick defensively and cling onto the rebounds. I’m certain that my players will give it their all.”

The victory in Bamberg has effectively given FCBB home advantage. The atmosphere in the sold out Audi Dome is bound to be beneficial. Marko Pesic added that “the atmosphere during game four against ALBA was unbelievable. We’ll need help from our supporters.” Bayern are unbeaten at home in the playoffs this year.
