Bayern hold off Ulm

FC Bayern Basketball defeated ratiopharm ulm 83-69 in the Eurocup Last 32 and moved to the top of the standings in Group G.

Only ten days after their matchup in the BBL won easily by Munich, Ulm came out intent on winning their first game of 2016 and stopping Bayern's streak in front of 5,032 fans in the Audi Dome. However, Bayern's balance on both offense and defense took away any chances their BBL rivals had for the upset, taking the lead five minutes into the first quarter and were never threatened to lose it.

Bryce Taylor led the Reds with 18 points thanks to four three-pointers, Nihad Djedovic added 15 points, while both Alex Renfroe (3-for3 from 3pt-FG) and John Bryant each scored 14 points. Bayern are unbeaten in Group G after two games in the Eurocup Last 32.

Before they travel to Spain to face Dominion Bilbao Basket next week, Bayern will host Bremerhaven in the BBL on Sunday, January 17th. Tip-off is at 17:00 CET.

Scoring by quarter (FCBB - ULM): 22-19, 26-17, 18-16, 17-17

FC Bayern Team: Bryce Taylor (18 points/4 three-pointers), Nihad Djedovic (15), Alex Renfroe (14/5 assists), John Bryant (14), Dusko Savanovic (9/6 rebounds), Deon Thompson (7), Justin Cobbs (4), Paul Zipser (2), Anton Gavel (5 reb). DNP: Daniel Mayr, Maximilian Kleber and Sebastian Schmitt.

POSTGAME REACTION

Svetislav Pesic, Head Coach, FCBB: "We did not expect such a strong defense from Ulm. They are actually a very offense-oriented team, but today their defense was also excellent. We had difficulty to run our offense. A 14-point win is good for us, as we had a few problems. Dusko Savanovic was able to practice hard, and Alex Renfroe came back for the first time on Tuesday. We have now two wins, but the group continues to be very balanced."

Thorsten Leibenath, Head Coach, Ulm: "Of course it is obvious that one can make the comparison to the game ten days ago. I have to clearly compliment my team. We displayed a good defense today. Our rotation was better, and we did not allow fastbreak points. However we missed too many freethrows and open shots. It is ultimately bitter that we lost, but we can take a lot of positives from this defeat."

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

1st Quarter

FCBB Head Coach Svetislav Pesic started Alex Renfroe, Anton Gavel, Bryce Taylor, Dusko Savanovic and Deon Thompson for the second consecutive game in ten days between BBL rivals, this time in the Eurocup Last 32. Ulm started hot, a pair of three-pointers gave them an early 8-3 lead, but Bayern's offense woke up after consecutive three-pointers by Taylor and Savanovic (9-8, 3' minutes). Ulm did not falter early like they did a week earlier in their BBL matchup, matching scores and exchanging leads. After Savanovic scored for the 15-14 lead, he stole the ball from All Star Game MVP Per Günther and fed Taylor in transition for the easy, fastbreak layup (17-14, 6'). Ulm's offense started to sputter as they could only muster free-throws the rest of the quarter and Paul Zipser demonstrated Bayern's defensive stance with a block. Munich led 22-19 after the first ten minutes.

2nd Quarter

Taylor sparked a 7-0 run to start the second quarter with a three-pointer and a basket, and Zipser followed with field goal to build a 10-point lead (29-19, 12'). Justin Cobbs scored a couple of time to maintain the lead (33-23, 14'). When Ulm got their offense going, Bayern answered. After Augustine Rubit's three-pointer, Nihad Djedovic followed with one of his own (36-26, 15'). Savanovic demonstrated Munich's energy in the paint with an offensive rebound and tip-in (40-28, 17'). Consecutive baskets by Ulm and a turnover forced Coach Pesic to call timeout (42-34, 19'). Renfroe and John Bryant responded to coach's words, sinking back-to-back treys to ensure a 48-36 lead at the half.

3rd Quarter

Raymar Morgan led Ulm with 23 points in the game and his three-pointer started off the second half, but Taylor once again answered with the long ball (51-39, 21'). Thompson played well on both sides, first with a block on defense and then scored a tough bucket despite being fouled (56-47, 25'). Munich's transition game displayed some showtime as Taylor grabbed the rebound, Savanovic pushed the ball up the court to Cobbs, who dished it to Bryant for the score (60-49, 27'). Günther was finally able to show off his three-point skills that won him the competition at All Star Day, but his former teammate Bryant swished his three-pointer, Munich extended their lead to 66-52 heading into the final quarter.

4th Quarter

Djedovic opened the scoring in the last 10 minutes off the inbounds pass from Gavel, Ulm Head Coach Thorsten Leibenath was not happy and quickly called timeout (68-52, 32'). Renfroe would not let Ulm any chance to gather themselves, first feeding Taylor in transition for the score (70-54, 33'). "Lil' Al" then sank a couple of three's, including one from way downtown (76-61, 36'). Taylor iced the game with a three-pointer as the shot clock expired (79-63, 37'). Bayern win their second game in 10 days against their German rivals and sit top of Group G at 2-0 in the Eurocup Last 32.
