Green Taking the Positives from 2015-16

Hi everyone,

An eventful season with FC Bayern for me, which included many sporting highlights, has come to an end.

After I came back from Hamburg last summer it felt like I’d never been away, and I resumed training with the first team straight away. Leaving aside all the seriousness and focus, I love being on the pitch with Jerome Boateng, David Alaba and Joshua Kimmich. It’s always great to be around those guys.

At the end of July, I visited China for the first time, on an eight-day tour together with the team. What an experience! The cities over there are huge, and the Shanghai skyline was particularly impressive. The heat and the humidity really took their toll on us during training and in our matches against Valencia, Inter and Guangzhou Evergrande.

Going into last season, my priority was to play on a regular basis. That’s why I decided at the start of the season to push for a place in the second team, while continuing to train with the first-team squad on a regular basis during the week. We set ourselves the goal of promotion to the third division and started the season well. After that, though, we struggled for consistency and dropped a lot of points unnecessarily. We could have done a lot better overall in hindsight – we took four points from our fixtures against Regensburg, a team that won promotion.

In December I was part of the starting XI in the first team playing in the Champions League away in Zagreb. There’s always a special atmosphere for Champions League matches, just hearing the pre-match hymn gives you goosebumps.

Then during the winter break I travelled with the first team squad to Doha to take part in their training camp. The conditions there were excellent, and a real highlight was watching the ATP final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal – my first live tennis match.

After the last Bundesliga match of the season against Hannover there was the big trophy party in Munich’s Post Palast. Surprise guests OneRepublic performed: Ryan Tedder put on a great show – and so did Thomas Muller, our party animal!

The next morning, I travelled to Miami to join the US National Team and started with the preparations for the Copa America. At the end of the week-long training camp we played Puerto Rico and won 3-1 with relative ease. I had a few decent moments, I was pretty happy with my performance, and I always love meeting the US boys. I get along especially well with DeAndre Yedlin and Alfredo Morales, those are the guys I hang out with during training camps.

I take the positives from the 2015-16 season: I got much more playing-time with the second team, and I played for the US Under-23s and then appeared for the Men’s National Team in May. Of course I would have liked to appear more often for the Bayern Munich first team. I know I have the potential to prove myself in the Bundesliga.

Now it’s time for several days of vacation for me, and the next date in my diary is July 11, when Bayern Munich restarts training.

That’s it for now, enjoy the summer!

Yours, Julian.
