Another important personnel decision has been made among the Bavarian basketball players: National player Danilo Barthel has extended his contract with the double winner for another two years. The 26-year-old Power Forward moved to Munich in 2016 and was elected MVP of the final series when he and his team won the German championship. Barthel increased his point average to 12.8 points (65% shooting) in the finals against Berlin (3-2) and also rebounds with 4.6 per game.
"I'm really looking forward to being part of the FC Bayern family and I'm already looking forward to the new season," Barthel said after a final workout in the Audi Dome's gym before saying goodbye on his way to a three-week overseas holiday. "I've always said that I want to take the next step in the Euroleague and preferably with FC Bayern - all the better that it actually worked out now. I see the longer-term perspective of the Euroleague as an opportunity and potential for both sides to continue the really positive development together. I've taken on a role that the coach and the club appreciate. Now I'm looking forward to the Euroleague, where we want to prove ourselves against the many strong opponents and top players and be as successful as possible in the BBL as we were this year.
FCBB sports director Daniele Baiesi commented on the good news: "We are all very happy that Danilo will stay with us. He improved again last season when the team needed him most. He proved that he could fill the role and deserved it, after he was forced to fill in after Milan Macvan's injury. The way he repaid the trust we placed in him was great. Danilo is one of the pillars of the future of our association."
Barthel has played 72 BBL games for the Bavarians (225 in total) and scored 651 points (9.0 ppg). The three-point percentage of the mobile Big Man this season was an impressive 41.9% and in the EuroCup he scored an average of 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds for the semi-finalist. In the Euroleague, for which the Bavarians qualified as German champions, Danilo Barthel will debut with coach Dejan Radonjic from October.
