Before the first game of FC Bayern Basketball at the "MagentaSport Cup 2023," Serge Ibaka answered some initial questions about his move to Munich.
Serge, why did you choose Bayern for your next step after the NBA, even though the team is still on its way to reaching the top level in Europe?
SERGE IBAKA: "For me, it is a privilege to be able to join this historic, globally renowned sports club so that the basketball team can rise to the top of Europe. I had a long NBA career, but I approach this new chapter with a lot of enthusiasm – I still have a lot of fire in me and love the game. The fact that Pablo Laso is the coach was also a decisive factor for me. To me, he is one of the best coaches in the world."
You already have experience with European basketball from your past. Will that make the adjustment easier, or is that time too far back?
"I spent my youth years in Spain and played internationally with the Spanish national team at the Olympics, the World Cup, and the European Championship. Additionally, I was able to play several EuroLeague games for Real Madrid when there was the NBA lockout in 2011. Yes, all of that was a while ago, and it may take some time to get used to the new rhythm of the competitions and the game here again. But I am very confident about it."
What will be your role in the team, and what do you hope to bring?
"I want to provide my experience to help Coach Laso establish a high standard and a strong work ethic in the team. I always give my all to the game, and I definitely plan to do the same here in Munich and hopefully help the younger players. On the court, I want to assist the team with everything that is needed, starting from defense to my shooting range. I want to be a part of a team that collaborates and has a winning mentality."
