Mission and Governance
Bayern Basketball aims to develop talents and their athletic abilities. Developing players’ personalities takes precedence over short-term team success and titles.
Highly qualified coaches with years of experience train and develop individuals in one-on-one and team sessions, helping young players to excel. The Bundesliga team of FC Bayern epitomises the ideals that we aim to offer kids and young talents. All of them are offered an opportunity to train and eventually play. Our junior teams compete as performance teams; they train and compete accordingly in the most competitive leagues: The U19 team in the Junior Basketball League NBBL, the U16s in the Youth Basketball League JBBL and the U14s in the Bavarian League.
Additionally, talents on the verge of the Bundesliga squad have the opportunity to practice and play in our men’s second team (Regionalliga). This is a concept that recently saw Germany youth international Paul Zipser brought into coach Svetislav Pesic’s team.
Four U12 and three U10 teams provide a broad base. A total of 22 youth teams have been strutting their stuff in the 2013/14 season. FC Bayern Basketball offers talented players from any club the opportunity to gain early playing experience at the highest level with its dual licence scheme. The success of this approach speaks for itself: In recent years, numerous prospective players at FC Bayern have found their way into national teams of the DBB (German Basketball Association).
Support and training at junior level already commences at elementary schools. Bernhard Haucke heads the SAG school program – an initiative with third-graders from 39 elementary schools in Munich. Bayern Basketball provides theses SAGs with coaches and an opportunity for kids to get accustomed with basketball. Continuous scouting efforts in these programs guarantee that young talents benefit from an ideal supportive environment. Bayern has a clear vision for its high performance talents and provides the opportunities for future Bundesliga players.
Head of department Andreas Minges is responsible for and leads our junior programmes along with managing directors Marko Pesic and Volker Stix. Berthold Bisselik (head coach for development), Oliver Kostic (men’s reserves head coach / NBBL) and Marko Woytowicz (junior teams coordinator) are our full-time youth coaches and, along with Jan Schmidt-Bäse, are responsible for the content and organisational aspects of the youth academy.
