Referees

The Refereeing Department has existed since 1919 and currently comprises around 125 referees.

Each season, they officiate more than 2,000 official association matches, ranging from youth fixtures to the performance tiers in men’s and women’s football, as well as numerous games at indoor and youth tournaments. In cooperation with the association, our up-and-coming referees are also gladly assigned to friendly matches of our women’s and junior teams, where they can, among other things, be introduced to match management with assistant referees.

This takes place within our internal team, established several years ago, dedicated to the mentoring and training of our referees. Our aim is to provide our young talents with high-quality education to prepare them for the association’s development squads, while also supporting our experienced referees on their path to higher divisions.

The youngest referee at FC Bayern is 14 years old, and the oldest active league referee still officiates more than 50 matches per year at the age of 75. In addition to the many active referees, Bayern referees also serve as officials in numerous committees up to and including the DFB. With Robert Schraudner as Vice President of the BFV and District Chairman of Upper Bavaria, one of our colleagues holds a key decision-making role at association level. Moreover, many of our colleagues serve as official referee observers up to the highest Bavarian leagues and the Junior Bundesliga. Other colleagues are active in refereeing groups and district refereeing groups. Two colleagues act as chairpersons in sports tribunals, making an important contribution to the subsequent review of day-to-day events on our football pitches. Voluntary work is also strengthened by a Volunteer Officer from our ranks.

Bayern referees keep themselves fit through the annual performance test. Around 25 colleagues additionally play in our referees’ football team, which is a welcome guest at many friendly and charity matches. The referees’ team also takes part in tournaments and has already won notable titles. It operates under the overall leadership of our Deputy Head of Department, Michael Humpa.
