Classy Reds tame Wolves

FC Bayern beat VfL Wolfsburg 4-0 on Saturday afternoon, finishing the Bundesliga campaign in style and enjoying a successful dress rehearsal for the DFB Cup final. Kingsley Coman handed Bayern an early lead, Michaël Cuisance doubling the advantage before half-time. The home side were decimated after Joshua Guilavogui was sent off for a second bookable offence midway through the second half. Robert Lewandowski netted from the spot and Thomas Müller scored Bayern's 100th goal this campaign, making sure the scoreline reflected the balance of play.

The Bavarians started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Álvaro Odriozola, Jérôme Boateng, David Alaba and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Leon Goretzka and Cuisance featured in a twin holding role behind Coman, Müller and Serge Gnabry, with hitman Lewandowski up front.

French duo

The champions dominated possession from the off, although the hosts had a couple of half-chances. Bayern drew first blood after only three minutes, when Müller's excellent pass released Coman, who fired past netminder Koen Casteels and into the far corner of the net. Neuer made a strong save against Josip Brekalo, Casteels denying Gnabry twice at the other end.

Coman hit the side-netting before Lewandowski saw a header saved, but Cuisance doubled the advantage, scoring his first goal in Bayern colours, a sumptuous curler from 25 yards into the top corner of the net. The Wolves had the ball in the back of the net shortly before half-time, but the goal did not count because of Daniel Ginczek's foul against Odriozola.

Plain sailing

Bayern went straight back onto the front foot after half-time, Gnabry firing over the bar from close distance before seeing another effort saved. Lewandowski soon tapped in, but the goal was ruled out for an offside position. Guilavogui fouled Cuisance in the box, earning his marching orders, with Lewandowski netting the ensuing penalty. Müller rounded off the scoreline and Bayern's century of goals this term when he crashed home a loose ball. Match official Patrick Ittrich blew for full-time, and the championship celebrations began.

The result means Bayern finish the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign on 82 points, 13 clear of runners-up Dortmund. The Bavarians will be back in action next Saturday, when they cross swords with Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Cup final, and they will be buoyed by the championship title and their impressive display against Wolfsburg.
