Bayern held late by Dortmund

FC Bayern were held to a 2-2 draw by Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Leon Goretzka handed Bayern the lead after the half-hour and Leroy Sané doubled the advantage early in the second half. Youssoufa Moukoko pulled one back with a quarter-hour to go before Anthony Modeste's goal deep into added time meant Dortmund salvaged a draw.

The Bavarians started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Marcel Sabitzer and Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Sané, Jamal Musiala and Sadio Mané, with Serge Gnabry up front. Josip Stanišić, Joshua Kimmich and Kingsley Coman took over from Davies, Sabitzer and Gnabry at half-time, Noussair Mazraoui and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting coming on for de Ligt and Mané in the second half.

Leon opens

The 81,365 full house in Dortmund saw the two sides cancel each other out in the first 20 minutes. A Donyell Malen effort was deflected behind as Bayern struggled with stray passing. Upamecano made a crucial interception from a Julian Brandt cross before Neuer denied Raphaël Guerreiro.

Munich upped the ante now and were soon rewarded, Musiala laying back for Goretzka, who blasted into the bottom corner from the edge of the D. Neuer's save against Malen meant the sides went into the break with Bayern a goal to the good.

Late leveller

Bayern were dominant in the second half, although Marius Wolf called Neuer into action straight after the restart. Mané headed wide but Sané soon beat keeper Alexander Meyer from the edge of the D. Coman saw an effort blocked and Meyer denied Musiala from close range as well.

Goretzka fired just wide but Modeste invited Moukoko to pull one back for Borussia. The goal boosted Dortmund, Neuer denying Modeste a golden chance from point blank. Coman was sent off for a second bookable offence, and the day turned sour when Nico Schlotterbeck's cross found Modeste, who headed in with the full-time whistle imminent.

The result means Bayern have 16 points from nine matches, lying third in the table. The Bavarians will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to face Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League.
