FC Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 4-2 to reclaim top spot in the table. Dayot Upamecano handed Bayern the lead when keeper Gregor Kobel mishit the former's long ball from the back. Thomas Müller's brace ensured a comfortable half-time lead, with Kingsley Coman closing out the meeting after the restart. Emre Can pulled one back from the penalty spot before Donyell Malen scored Dortmund's second goal, but Bayern sealed three crucial points to topple the Black and Yellows from their perch.
New coach Thomas Tuchel opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation for his debut in the Bayern dugout. The German record champions started with Yann Sommer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Leroy Sané, Müller and Coman, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting up front. Serge Gnabry, Sadio Mané, João Cancelo, Jamal Musiala and Ryan Gravenberch took over from Müller, Choupo-Moting, Davies, Coman and Goretzka in the second half.
Blistering first half
Once referee Marco Fritz had set events in motion, the match got off to a lively start, with both sides looking to attack. De Ligt made a crucial block against Marius Wolf but Bayern took the lead when Kobel came out to clear Upamecano's long ball but mishit it, the ball trundling over the line. The goal boosted Munich, Goretzka seeing a header saved and a shot deflected wide, but Bayern made it two when de Ligt flicked on a Kimmich corner, with Müller mopping up at the far stick.
Kobel soon parried a Sané shot from distance, with Müller netting the rebound. Coman and Pavard fired wide, Marco Reus aiming too high at the other end. Choupo-Moting had an effort saved before Coman before Goretzka's fine pass found Coman, who stumbled when trying to round Kobel, and the sides turned round with Bayern three goals to the good.
King seals it
Proceedings were similar after the restart, although Sébastien Haller tested Sommer. Sanés pinpoint pass found Coman, who slotted home to put the game to bed. Kimmich teed up Choupo-Moting, who shone with a fine first touch and a sideways scissor-kick to find the net, but the goal was chalked off for offside.
Müller aimed too high and Kobel denied Choupo-Moting, Sommer saving from Malen as Bayern shifted down a gear. Gnabry upended Jude Bellingham in the box, Can converting from the spot. Can beat Mané to Sané's square, Musiala seeing a shot deflected wide. Munich had another goal ruled out for offside after Gnabry lobbed Kobel before Malen scored Borussia's second goal with the full-time whistle imminent.
The victory takes Bayern onto 55 points from 26 matches, two points clear of their closest rivals. FCB will be back in action on Tuesday when they entertain Freiburg in the DFB Cup.
