Bayern held late by Stuttgart

FC Bayern were held to a 2-2 draw by VfB Stuttgart on Saturday. Mathys Tel put Bayern ahead before half-time. Chris Führich levelled the scores and Jamal Musiala restored the lead around the hour mark. Serhou Guirassy then dispatched an injuy-time penalty to snatch a point for the visitors.

Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Noussair Mazraoui, Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Mathys Tel, Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry, with Thomas Müller up front. Josip Stanišić, Leroy Sané, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Sadio Mané and Ryan Gravenberch came on for Mazraoui, Tel, Müller, Musiala and Gnabry in the second half.

Tel on target

Bayern dominated possession but chances proved few and far between at first. A Kimmich free-kick sailed inches over the bar but Munich upped the ante after the half-hour. Tel saw an effort parried, keeper Florian Müller denying Gnabry on the rebound.

Kimmich and Gnabry fired over but a goal was coming and arrived when Kimmich's long ball found Davies, whose cutback invited Tel to fire home from 16 yards, the youngster marking his first Bundesliga start in style to become the club's youngest ever goalscorer in the division.

Lively second half

It was a much more entertaining affair after the restart, and Stuttgart soon had the ball in the back of the net but the goal was disallowed for a foul against Kimmich. Gnabry saw a shot blocked but Stuttgart did score the equaliser minutes later, Führich finding the far corner of the net from close distance. Bayern replied almost immediately as Musiala sidestepped a defender before slotting home.

Florian Müller denied Gnabry and Musiala, with Goretzka firing off target. Guirassy hit the bar before Davies hit the side-netting at the other end. Stuttgart had another goal ruled out after a foul against Kimmich again but would ultimately snatch a point when awarded a penalty for a foul on review that was converted by Guirassy in added time.

The result means Bayern have 12 points from six matches, topping the table overnight at least. The Bavarians will be back in action next Tuesday when they entertain Barcelona in the Champions League.
