Below-par Bayern fall in Frankfurt

FC Bayern fell 5-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. Omar Marmoush, Eric Junior Dina Ebimbe and Hugo Larsson scored for the clinical hosts in the first half, with Joshua Kimmich pulling one back before half-time. Dina Ebimbe and Ansgar Knauff netted for Frankfurt after the restart.

The Bavarians started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Noussair Mazraoui, Dayot Upamecano, Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Kingsley Coman, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Leroy Sané, with Harry Kane as the target man. Konrad Laimer and Raphaël Guerreiro came on for Mazraoui and Davies at half-time, with Serge Gnabry and Thomas Müller taking over from Coman and Choupo-Moting midway through the second half. Gnabry had to be replaced with injury minutes after coming on, Musiala taking over.

Trailing at half-time

Frankfurt got off to the better start. Knauff hit the side-netting and Dina Ebimbe saw a shot blocked, but the hosts soon made the most of a mix-up in the box, Fares Chaibi hitting the bar before Marmoush tapped in the rebound. Bayern went looking for a reply and Coman aimed too high before Kane fired wide. Choupo-Moting saw an effort saved, but Frankfurt doubled the lead when Dina Ebimbe beat Neuer from close distance.

Goretzka rifled over, but Frankfurt made it three when Larsson found the far corner of the net. Kane had a shot blocked, Kimmich pulling one back for Bayern when he powered home from 20 yards with the half-time whistle imminent.

Tough going

Choupo-Moting had a shot deflected behind and Coman saw an effort saved, but Dina Ebimbe beat Neuer from a tight angle. Choupo-Moting aimed too high before Knauff found the net. The linesman’s flag was up, but the goal stood after VAR intervention.

The pace dropped now, with Frankfurt happy to sit back. Upamecano headed wide and Laimer miscued from distance. Niels Nkounkou fired over and Kane miscued a header as Bayern suffered their first Bundesliga defeat of the season.

The result means Bayern have 32 points from 13 matches. The Bavarians will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to face Manchester United in the Champions League.
