Kane the hero as Bayern beat Augsburg

FC Bayern beat FC Augsburg 3-1 in Sunday's Bavarian derby. Bayern took a lead thanks to Felix Uduokhai's own goal, with Harry Kane doubling the advantage from the penalty spot before half-time. Kane put the game to bed when he rounded off his brace midway through the second half. Augsburg pulled one back through Dion Beljo in the closing stages.

Bayern started with Sven Ulreich in goal and Noussair Mazraoui, Minjae Kim, Dayot Upamecano and Alphonso Davies in defence. Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich anchored a midfield featuring Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, with Kane up front.

Konrad Laimer, Mathys Tel, Thomas Müller, Matthijs de Ligt and Ryan Gravenberch took over from Mazraoui, Sané, Gnabry, Mazraoui and Coman in the second half.

Kane on target

Clear-cut chances were few and far between at first, with stray passing and Augsburg's pressing stifling Bayern's attacks. Kimmich saw a shot deflected behind, Ulreich beating Mërgim Berisha to a pass at the other end. Gnabry aimed too high before Ermedin Demirović miscued and Goretzka saw a long-range effort saved.

Bayern were increasingly in command now and broke the deadlock when keeper Finn Dahmen parried a Sané shot, but the ball bounced off Uduokhai and crossed the line. Munich were soon awarded a penalty for handball, Kane dispatching from the spot to make it two before half-time.

Plain sailing

Bayern stepped right back onto the front foot after the restart, Kane firing wide from a tight angle. A short pass forced Ulreich to race out, but he got back soon enough to save Ruben Vargas' shot from distance. Dahmen denied Coman and made a strong save against Gnabry, Upamecano seeing an effort from close range at a corner deflected behind.

Sané hit the post with a curling attempt, but a goal was coming and duly arrived when Davies' square invited Kane to beat Dahmen and round off his brace. Kane miscued a header before Demirović teed up Beljo, who got one back for the away side, but Bayern went on to seal a deserved victory.

Two wins from two takes Bayern to second place behind Union Berlin on goals scored in the nascent standings. The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Gladbach in the Bundesliga.
