Kings of Europe! Super Bayern overcome PSG and seal treble

FC Bayern are kings of Europe! A narrow but deserved 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain means Bayern are European champions for the sixth time and treble winners for the second time in the club's 120-year history. Kingsley Coman scored the match-winner on the hour mark.

The Bavarians started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Joshua Kimmich, Jérôme Boateng, David Alaba and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Thiago and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Serge Gnabry, Thomas Müller and Coman, with Robert Lewandowski up front. Boateng was forced off the field with injury midway through the first half, Niklas Süle taking over. Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Perišić came on for Gnabry and Coman with 20 minutes to go, Corentin Tolisso replacing Thiago in the closing stages.

    Lewy denied by the post

Once match official Daniele Orsato had set events in motion at Lisbon's Estádio da Luz, the two attack-minded sides cancelled each other out for the first quarter-hour. Thiago fired over the bar from distance, Kylian Mbappé seeing an effort blocked. The game sprang to life now, Neuer crucially denying Neymar. Bayern saw a number of moves stifled by stray passing, but Davies found Lewandowski in the box, the striker spinning and hitting the post.

Ángel di María rifled over from close distance before Neymar saw a shot deflected wide, but Bayern came closer to unpicking PSG's solid defence, netminder Keylor Navas saving a Lewandowski header. A Coman chip evaded friend and foe alike, Navas collecting it. Former FCB man Juan Bernat beat Lewandowski to a Davies cross. The biggest scare came with the half-time whistle imminent, Mbappé getting hold of a stray Alaba pass at the edge of the box, but he fired straight at Neuer, and the contest was goalless at half-time.

    King seals it

Bayern dominated possession but failed to create anything of attacking note at first, but the golden moment came on the hour mark, when a Kimmich cross found the unmarked Coman at the far stick, the Frenchman heading home against his youth club. Coman almost bagged a brace two minutes later but saw his effort cleared off the line. PSG went looking for an equaliser now, Neuer comfortably saving Di María's cross-cum-shot before denying Marquinhos.

Coutinho miscued a free-kick before Bayern had Neuer to thank for preserving the lead when he made an outstanding save against Neymar in the increasingly frantic closing stages, but the Bavarians saw out the storm. When the final whistle sounded, Bayern had everything they wanted, celebrating in release, in elation, in triumph.
